Democrats in the Oregon legislature tried pass a climate change bill. Republican senators made themselves scarce, delaying the bill. The governor called the state police to round them up. A lawmaker responded, “Send bachelors and come heavily armed." nyti.ms/2XYcV8q

To be sure, automakers are still asking for a weakening of fuel economy standards. Obama-era rules through 2026 are "unattainable," @Auto_Alliance's Schwietert just said. In their letter to Trump, automakers ask for a "midway" solution.

David Schwietert of the @Auto_Alliance, which represents big automakers, repeats its support for "year-over-year increases in fuel economy" -- not a freezing of those standards, as the Trump administration has proposed.

California's clean air regulator @MaryNicholsCAsays the Trump administration has been unwilling to find common ground on clean car standards. "Their claim that California offered no counter-proposal is false. They unilaterally decided to cut off conversations."

EPA's clean air chief Bill Wehrum is also testifying on clean car standards. @RepDianaDeGettepoints out that he previously lobbied for oil industry groups, and asks whether he met with his former clients on the admin's rollback. Wehrum says he does not remember doing so.

DOT's Heidi King is testifying. She says overly-ambitious fuel efficiency standards will dramatically increase car prices and discourage people from replacing their older cars with cleaner, safer cars. (There is little evidence for this dramatic price increase.)

So who wants less fuel-efficient cars? Some in the oil industry that benefit from continued gasoline sales, as we wrote last year. @EnergyCommerceis now investigating oil industry lobbying on the issue. "This rollback picks one winner: the oil industry," Rep @FrankPallonesaid.

"The oil industry thus stands to profit significantly from the proposed rollback,” wrote the Chairs. Meanwhile, Americans bear the health and economic costs. E&C is conducting oversight of the rollback and the reported secret lobbying campaign leading up to its release.

The proposed rollback would add more than 7 BILLION additional tons of carbon into the atmosphere this century, and increase US oil consumption by 500,000 barrels per day – which may cumulatively cost Americans up to$236 billion in extra fuel by 2035.
